These funds will support recruitment and development of local physicians and PAs from the islands as faculty members for Barry. It will provide the initial administrative and technical support personnel needed for the start up phase of the operation until it is self sustaining. It also will enable clinical training to take place in patient populations comprised of underinsured, low income, culturally diverse, indigent and elder individuals. At this time, there are only 2. PA students in the USVI, which includes St. John, will receive didactic training via the same interactive video conferencing process already in place in St. Petersburg, where in 2. PA program expanded to the University Partnership Center at St. Virgin Islands are medically underserved health profession shortage areas. It is our goal that this initiative will result in improved access to care and will take medical education to place- bound islanders and enable them to pursue careers as physician assistants upon graduation.
